The benefits of tea can go far beyond a refreshment.

A cup of tea and a chat with a friend is a pleasure, a cup of tea can be soothing, a cup of tea can be a chance to take some time out during the day to recharge your batteries a bit.  A cup of tea can also be part of a positive ritual.

In the morning first thing I have a cup of green tea and try to do a few slow deep breaths or a few rounds of alternate nostril breathing to help reduce any anxious thoughts or lift any low mood feelings before I start the day – and when I do this regularly it definitely helps!

I always have a cup of tea when working on the computer, writing nutrition blogs, facebook posts, doing work for clients or doing admin. I do feel it helps me focus and helps me relax.

Black tea, oolong tea, white tea and green tea all have less caffeine than coffee if you are sensitive to caffeine and are rich in antioxidants which can help protect against disease. These antioxidants help fight “free radicals” which are produced in the body, help support weight loss, support eye health and have anti-inflammatory properties. Research shows that Green tea even helps bone mineral density and strength and has calming properties (from the L Theanine) and can aid concentration and memory.

There are many herbal teas known for their medicinal values. Try teabags, loose leaf tea or herbs from your garden. Don’t overconsume any one type and if on medication always check with your GP.

Here are a few suggestions to use in your day to day life to support your health and wellbeing. Try:
• To support digestion – peppermint, fennel, chamomile
• To support energy – ginseng, apple and ginger, lemon and ginger, green tea, rosehip
• To support detox – milk thistle, dandelion, nettle, detox blends, lemon and ginger
• To support immunity – Echinacea, green tea
• To help calm and relax and soothe your nerves– lavender, chamomile, lemon balm, valerian, lemon verbena, passionflower

I met my friend one day for a cup of tea at the Art Gallery in Edinburgh and we discovered we had both ordered loose leaf dandelion tea from Amazon! We both intuitively felt in need of a gentle cleanse both physically, energetically and emotionally. This was not long after some terrible events in the UK.

Even the act of having a cup of tea and knowing the benefits can boost your sense of well-being and knowing you are nourishing yourself on some level.

Please share your favourite tea and rituals.
